The Museum of Ice Cream NYC

December 20, 2019

The Museum of Ice Cream is back in town in NYC, it’s original hometown and it’s here to stay!

So what IS the Museum of Ice Cream? If you know, you know. But if you don’t, where have you been? It’s one of the OG pop-up Instagram havens. It started here in NYC years ago and then migrated to LA, San Francisco and Miami before finally coming back home. They opened up a temporary pop-up called Pint Shop last summer I visited that you can read about here. What started as a small experiment has become a national phenomenon as its products and merchandise can be found all around the country now in Target stores and even had a makeup collaboration with Sephora last year. They’re still going strong with their own line of ice cream at Target stores. I loved their LA location and I enjoyed their Pint Shop rendition last summer so I was so happy to hear that they were coming back to NYC finally. I legit stalked their ice cream truck during NYCC because I was so excited.

TICKETS

Tickets launched this past October and you bet your bottom dollar I snagged tickets for their first opening week! I decided against a weekend day and tested my luck on a weekday instead for a chance of being less busy so I could have optimal time gramming and experiencing it without feeling or being rushed through the experience since quite frankly, the prices and fees are quite steep at $39 a pop with a $8.50 service charge . Long story short, is it worth it? Absolutely. And no, this is not sponsored or anything. I bought tickets on my own and I have honestly always found Museum of Ice Cream to be one of the better pop-ups I’ve attended. I am NOT entirely bias though as I did report back on the Pint Shop Tasting rather objectively which you can read about here for that experience.

TIME

My appointment was Thursday at 2pm and it worked out pretty well. I didn’t leave til around 6pm (yes, I spent 4 hours here, don’t judge me) and when I left, there was a LONG line waiting to get in. So I definitely recommend a weekday and I recommend earlier time slots if you don’t want to fight for an empty gram photo. Although, I do have to say, they have also improved their policies in regards to time! You still can only go forward in a pop-up (meaning you can’t go back to a room once you’ve moved forward) BUT there is no time limit on ANY of the rooms and exhibits! Yes, you read that right, no time limit! For those who have visited MOIC and infinity room like pop-ups, you know their money maker rooms usually have time limits as little as 45 seconds. For the LA MOIC, the sprinkle pool was limited to 3 minutes once they started the clock. Gone are these days for this installation. You can stay in the sprinkle room as long as you like! But remember, going during busier times, means a lot of people in the same room as you and a few of you might be standing around fighting for that coveted empty shot. Tickets are also the same price no matter what day or time slot you choose, so I definitely recommend strategizing to get the most out of your visit. They do only allow a set number of guests at a time, which is good and bad; good because you’ll never feel too crowded but bad because if you go during a busy time, obviously you’ll have to wait in line before your group can get in. It’s a no brainer to go on an off-peak day at an off-peak time (think before school lets out and the families flood the place because that’s what happened at 6pm when I walked out). It is self-paced though so take your time once you get in and absolutely take advantage and take photos of everything, eat everything and play with everything.

ICE CREAM

I think I got to try 5 different ice creams in the exhibit. I remember Churro Churro being in the first room, which was delicious, an ice cream cake pop, booza ice cream (elastic ice cream), soft serve, and Queen Bee (a delicious honey ice cream!). They were all stationed pretty evenly apart and you’re allowed seconds or thirds or however many times as you want to keep going back for more so long as you’re still in that room! My favorite was the Queen Bee and the booza since it was unique and my first time trying stretchy ice cream.

THE ROOMS

There are 13 installations across 3 floors. Some rooms are bigger than others; some HUGE and some closet sized but there is definitely a LOT to get through. Take your time, take your time, take your time! Oh yes, a coat check is provided before you start on your adventure which I found really convenient and amazing to have built in to a pop-up. The only other pop-up I’ve found to have done this so far was Rose Mansion, which is also another one of my favorite and highly recommended pop-ups worth your money. They also have restrooms available on the first floor before you start as well. I found the bathroom to not only be clean, spacious (unheard of in NYC) but also gorgeous and grammable. I found it to be an extra photo op!

After the coat check, you walk down a pink waffle cone wallpaper hallway that has cute little facts about the beginnings of ice cream on the wall. From there, you step into a room where you brainstorm and think up your new ice cream name and write it on your name tag. I suggest you do this before arriving so you can think up something cute and clever. I was RxBerries & Cream but they have a lot of cute celebrity ones on the wall as inspiration like Dairyana Grande and Angelato Jolie. From there, you get a little introduction from the staff and head into your first room where you get a sample of Churro Churro. This room is themed like a cute little speakeasy bar. From there, you walk up a long pink hallway upstairs into a Marie Antoinette dream of a room filled with dessert and balloons. This was probably my favorite room as it smelled amazing like cotton candy and was in a pink haze as you walk through. Everything was grammable from everything on the table to the wallpaper. MOIC really knocked it out of the ballpark with every little detail. On the table are cute little ice cream cake pops that are for you to take and enjoy as you please. I love that everything is for you to touch and grab and enjoy. It doesn’t feel like a stuffy museum where everything is roped off and no photography allowed.

From here, you journey to a pink room with different doors to open like a fun house, and then into a mock subway car but in pink MOIC fashion. This was another favorite room as it felt like a Disney ride as it hyper spaced you into the next “station.” There were so many photo ops in the subway room. From here, you walk though a galaxy/cloud room and then straight into the banana room. I liked that they brought the banana room back from the LA rendition. It’s a simple room but spacious, fun and I just love the splash of vibrant color. From here, they have two small rooms you have to crawl into to gram; one is a bouncy pink room and a sprinkle wall room. From there, you walk down a hallway with magnets on the wall where you can answer questions like “What are you grateful for?,” “What are your dreams?,” and “Where are you from?” After this, you get another serving of ice cream; this time the booza vanilla ice cream. Then you walk to the music room where they have giant keyboards on the wall with rings you can grab to play diifferent sound effects into the music, or you can listen in on two record players and scratch like a DJ. After this, you walk down a rainbow corridor (another one of my favorites because rainbow so duh) to the slide! This slide was wild! It spans 3 floors. You spiral down into the basement, which looks like a melted pink ice cream room. Here you get a soft serve cone before venturing into the yellow bee hive room with wings, chairs and a serving of Queen Bee ice cream. Then it’s onto the jungle gym with swings, seesaws, an ice cream cone ballpit, and ice cream cone basketball hoops. From here, you walk up the stairs into the last room, the sprinkle pool room! There are cubbies for you to leave your belongings and shoes before dipping into the insta-famous sprinkle pool, which my husband likes to call the Instagram hoe room, lol. The sprinkles used this time around are significantly larger and made of a softer rubber-like material. I don’t know how deep the pool really is because of how much larger the sprinkles are. I dug and dug but got too tired before finding the bottom, hahaha. There is a LOT of space compared to the LA rendition as well. The smaller “adults only” pool has more green sprinkles in it while the larger pool has a significant higher ratio of pink sprinkles. Again, take your time! After this, they have postcards and stickers on a table you can grab and take with you or write a message to leave on the wall. And after that, it’s time to say goodbye! You arrive back at the beginning, where coat check is and the bathroom before you leave.

Did I enjoy my visit? Hell yeah I did. It’s safe to say I absolutely love the new and permanent location of MOIC NYC. Would I go back? Yes, especially if they plan on doing holiday overlays on the existing exhibit like how they do the Christmas in San Francisco to switch it up from time to time. The tickets are expensive yes, but I definitely say it’s worth it in terms of grammability and the opportunities. It’s professional looking and the quality is there. It’s worth its price of admission. It doesn’t look like a cheap dorm room decoration installation like other cheap ‘pop-ups’ that claim to be ‘interactive’ and ‘immersive’ when they’re not at all anything but a cheap cash grab and an Instagram trap for “photos for the gram.” MOIC delivers; not only are the photo ops well done, but it really IS interactive and immersive. The staff is there acting the part, enthusiastic and charismatic to guide you on your journey. I found everyone to be incredibly friendly, helpful and encouraging. No one ever made me feel rushed or ashamed that I was taking too much time. They actually celebrated you as you took photos and took your time going through the entire exhibit. I love reading little facts everywhere and little interactive QR codes built into the museum for selfie filters and little games in the elevator. There is so much attention paid to detail from the windows to the walls, to the cute questions and rainbowed halls! You can actually PLAY here and take as long as you want playing. So it’s definitely not just for photos. And oh man, that slide still gets me. It was wild. That’s all I have to say. When you experience it for yourself sliding down 3 floors, you’ll get it. I screamed all the way down, hahaha.

If you choose to go, my best advice is to go in with a super cute outfit (don’t be basic or boring in your civilian clothes, come on, it’s about to be 2020!), have your ice cream name ready, and take your time take your time TAKE YOUR TIME. Go with a few friends, you’ll have a blast! And no worries if you don’t have anyone to go with either. The staff is amazing and super friendly at helping with taking your photos for you on your phone. Most of all, remember to have fun!

MOIC NYC is located at 558 Broadway and is open Wednesdays - Mondays: 9:30am - 9:30pm. It is a permanent location and tickets are currently on sale now through March 1, 2020 for right now. If you’re not sure about going yet, you can still stop in to the shop as the first floor is a gift shop with merchandise and ice cream available for purchase. You can see part of the slide at the entrance too. But if you go, well, when you know, you know. Have lots of fun!

My Favorite Things

December 18, 2019

It sounds cliche to say money can’t buy happiness, but as I grow older, my Christmas list gets shorter and shorter because the things I want, simply can’t be bought. You don’t need money to be rich. When you love what you have, you have everything you need. This is a list of my favorite things that money can’t buy.

  1. Family/Friends/Loved ones - With adulthood comes hectic schedules and limited availabilties. But I find that the people who I matter to, will always make time for me, and I will always make time for those I care most about. You can’t buy good friends who will always be there when you need them, a family that has your back, or a significant other that stands by your side in support when you’re going through rough waters. These types of bonds are rare. LOVE and true relationships are rare. Don’t take it for granted if you have this type of magic in your life.

  2. Time - We never have enough of it, we say. But in actuality, we all have the same amount of hours in a day. How we spend it is up to us. But tomorrow is never promised today, and in that respect, you must remember to spend the time you do have to spare with your loved ones as much as possible. Love them. Appreciate them. LET THEM KNOW. It costs you nothing and trust me, it means a lot to people and really brightens their day. You can’t buy more time in this life so spend the time you do have wisely with the ones who matter most.

  3. Food - So maybe this is one item on the list you can buy. But I list this because in place of trinkets and useless tchotchkes, I prefer to share a meal with my favorite people. I enjoy warm, fun meals, laughing and spending time with my ohana. Whether it’s at a fancy restaurant, or a cheap comfort food spot, or even home cooked meals, it’s always a good time. I love discovering, trying and sharing new food with my friends and family. Food brings people together and is not only a way to stay connected and catch up, but also allows us to learn about other cultures, new recipes, and exotic flavors.

  4. The little things - People always take for granted the little things until they’re no longer there and then they realize how much it meant to them. It’s human nature unfortunately so we must learn to practice gratitude and actively appreciate it every chance we get. Examples of little things that I love that can’t be bought are morning goodbye kisses, when my husband takes care of car stuff for me like oil changes and inspections, cleaning the house up before I get home, cutting up fruit for me and simply being there to pick me up from the airport when I come back from a trip. It means a lot to have someone there who cares enough about you to take care of the little details.

  5. Experiences/Memories - this one is a little cheat as it’s a combination of all of the things listed above. But I list it because this past year I took on my first race, a half marathon with one of my best friends, and with my sisters to cheer me on. My sisters came last minute and I didn’t realize til they were there with me, how much it really meant to me to have them there cheering me on, experiencing this achievement with me and making memories as I conquered new territory. Again, it’s the little things that really mean the most.

  6. Health - While some parts of your health can be ‘bought,’ like healthy food and properly scheduled doctor visits for routine check-ups, it’s not something that can be totally bought. It’s still something you have to work at and maintain. Good health is another thing many people take for granted and many people neglect. I’ve only recently taken a more active and pro-active role in being more conscious of my physical and mental well-being and it’s definitely improved for the better. KNOCK ON WOOD, but since improving my active lifestyle and making the conscious decision to eat healthier, these past two years I haven’t been seriously sick at all. Working out has also helped me work through my personal grieving process that I’ve been struggling with for the past 5 years.

  7. Motivation/Discipline - I originally had these two separate but realized they go hand in hand. It’s a hard thing to have and practice, and definitely can’t be bought. Self-motivation and self-discipline to keep going and work hard at something you really want is not something you can bottle up and save for a rainy day. Unfortunately it comes and goes. You have to learn to hone it, to be your own cheerleader, to push yourself and grasp any ounce of inspiration you find, to push forward when the going gets tough. I worked on a lot of projects and goals this year and some I finished, some were started and then forgotten about and some I never even touched upon. I worked out almost every day this year and it feels good to finally establish good habits. I set out to do at least one photoshoot a month and while some days I really didn’t want to get out of bed and really wanted to just cancel, I pushed through creative ruts, painted my face and brought it. I jam-packed my days off from work with so many activities to maximize my time looking for content for my blog. I hope to continue this energy and expand upon it in 2020.

  8. Inspiration - The internet is both a blessing and curse. It can be the most dangerous place and the most resourceful. With the golden age of social media and how fast thoughts, ideas, photos, music, news, etc can be shared, there is an endless sea of inspiration all around if you know where to go looking for it. When I first started modeling, I used Model Mayhem and saved so many photos for inspiration in a folder on my computer. It has since then evolved into Pinterest, Instagram folders, the ability to screenshot, reshare and repost and share links. I have so many notes saved on my phone of blog topics, many different folders of ideas and inspirations for shoots and poses, folders of workout ideas, food recipes, everything. The funny thing is I constantly worry about running out of ideas and getting stuck in a creative rut or writer’s block and yet I’m always working on something and trying to come up with more to do and try. So far, I’ve been lucky and haven’t hit that wall yet. I may cringe at my past self when I look back and compare but then I remember that this is how you grow. You get inspired and you get better. You improve over time, with experience, hard work and that fire burning in you to want to keep going and creating.

cartier

And for those who are still in search of a physical Christmas gift for a loved one anyways that they can wrap up with a bow for them to open on Christmas morning, here are a few of my more tangible favorite things if you need gift ideas. I use some of these every day and love them.

  1. Pearl earrings - I used to wear trendy cheap earrings all the time back in college. I would wear a different pair every day. But as I got older, my taste started to change and I realized I wanted something simple and classic for everyday wear. Pearls are always in and go with everything. These Tiffany pair are a little pricey but I’ve had them for nearly 5 years now and I still wear them every day. Full disclosure, I did have to get them sent in a few times in the beginning for repairs, since one of the pearls seemed to keep falling off the earring post but each and every time, Tiffany stood by their work and fixed it free of charge. Their service department is top notch and always treat you like VIPs. I love visiting their flagship for a quick cleaning whenever I’m in the area. I found an old Tiffany necklace from years ago, brought it to them and they cleaned and polished it right up for me, as good as new. This is what I love about these tried and true brands. They stand by their work. Now I know why people will spend a little more for quality.

  2. Fuzzy socks - When I was a kid, like all kids, I hated opening up gifts like this. What kind of kid wants clothes for Christmas? But as you get older, you start to appreciate the little things and stocking stuffers like this. I love fuzzy socks because they’re a warm and cozy for the winter. They’re great around the house when it’s freezing. And not to mention, it’s actually my secret as to how I’m able to stand walking around all day in my heeled boots. They’re so comfy and provide extra cushioning. I live in them all winter, at home and when I’m out and about, inside my boots. It helps provide extra warmth and insulation as an extra layer over your regular socks when it’s cold outside too.

  3. Wireless headphones - I used to wear wired earbuds while running but they’re really a hassle in the gym when you’re lifting. I bought the Ariana Grande headphones years ago when I tried out Twitch streaming for a hot minute and hated it but then realized they were perfect for the gym. Since then, my world has changed. I work out faster and harder as I’m able to work through it continuously without worry of wires getting tangled, accidentally pulled out or in the way. I use these literally every day. I love them. I’m thinking of picking up these cute pink Beats one for my race in February.

  4. Mickey bar plush - Ok, so I know this looks like a weird gift choice, but hear me out! First of all, it’s just so adorable. I own two of these scented Disney plushes already; a strawberry Mickey shaped macaron and a gingerbread Mickey cookie. They sit on my couch and smell amazing. And they’re so nice and comfy to hold onto or lay on, when you’re lounging on the couch watching a movie. They are both decorative and useful. They look so cute in my living room and everyone loves seeing them and wondering what the sweet smell is coming from.

  5. Laduree or Bottega Louie macarons - Who doesn’t love an edible gift? I love fresh macarons but you can always substitute with your loved ones favorite snacks like chocolate, cookies, cakes, candy, etc. When in doubt, food is always a good idea if you know what they love. Especially if they have a favorite item that’s hard to find or get. They’ll always appreciate the gesture and the work you went though to get them for them.

  6. Red marching band jacket - I am OBSESSED with band/military jackets. But I have yet to track down the perfect one. It’s a beautiful look that can go with almost anything, in my opinion. It can dress up a cute dress or add edge to an outfit.Although I do know this style is not for the faint of heart. You can substitute with a classic motorcycle jacket if your gift recipient is a little simpler in taste, as both of these styles will never go out of style and is universally flattering with many outfits and looks.

  7. Tiffany perfume - I love this scent as it’s clean, simple and fresh. It’s not overpowering or too much. But not everyone has the same preferences in smells and perfumes. Some people like warmer scents, some like floral, some like more tropical and some like more complex smells. So substitute with their favorite perfume if they have one.

  8. Red winter coats - I love bold colors and I’ve always found red to be a beautiful color for a winter coat, especially for the holidays. It’s a more interesting color than the basic black peacoat. I bought one on sale at Forever 21 almost 10 years ago and I still have it and wear it today. It always gets noticed and people always think it’s more expensive than it looks. I am in search of a new coat though as I do feel it’s time to replace this one as it’s finally showing signs of wear and tear over the years. I just have yet to find another one as I’m particular with details like gold buttons and fitted waistlines. Red coats are a classic staple in any closet.

  9. Sherpa hoodies - Like fuzzy socks, these hoodie are just so damn cozy. I live in these all winter long. They are so warm and soft and I love how it feels like teddy bear material. I love when the inside of hoodies are lined with this material. During extra cold winter nights, I’ll throw them in the dryer for a quick 5 minutes and then throw it on for that extra toasty warmth.

  10. Cute berets - I LOVE berets. They’re just so cute and make a cute fashion statement. I fell in love with this heart shaped one I saw on Raquel Reed during her trip to Paris. Unfortunately, it’s out of my price range at the moment but there are plenty of affordable cute options on Etsy. I wore a cute Mickey one on my recent cruise ship, made by Roses and Thorns, a small shop specializing in all things cute and Disney. They make tons of cute custom designs that are perfect for Disney trips and Disney bounds. Berets are also cute all year round, no matter the season and no matter where you are. You don’t have to be in Paris to wear a cute stylist beret. They add a little something to all my outfits when I accessorize with this cute headpiece.

Workout Routines

December 13, 2019

Warm up

  • I use this warm-up on leg days and days I know I’m going to go for a long run after my lifting session.

  1. 5 min on bike or stairmaster

  2. Stretching on mats: sit and reach toe touches, alternating legs, feet together, butterflies

  3. Glute bridges x 20 (resistance band)

  4. Clam shells x 20 each leg (resistance band)

  5. Donkey kicks x 20 each leg (resistance band)

  6. Pulses x 20 each leg (resistance band)

  7. Fire hydrants x 20 each leg (resistance band)

  8. Monster walk back and forth across the room =1 set. Do 3 sets

  9. Storks with exercise ball. Hold for 15 seconds, alternating legs, do 5 sets per leg.

  10. Planks x 3 sets for 90 seconds each.

  11. Leg lifts x 50. Do 3 sets.

Legs

  • I do legs 2-3 days a week, depending on how sore I feel since leg soreness is usually at its peak 2 days after you do them so I leave at least 1-2 days in between leg sessions. The reps for all the workouts below are just the reps I am currently able to do. If you’re able to do more, great! Keep going. If you can’t do them all, no worries! Work your way up and do what you can. Go easy on yourself so you don’t injure yourself but make sure it’s not too easy that you’re not getting anything out of it. You want it to be a little difficult.

  1. Leg press

    1. Start with just the plate x 20 reps.

    2. 2 x 25 lbs(one on each side) Do 20 reps.

    3. 2 x 45 lb weights. Do 20 reps.

    4. (2 x 45 lbs) + (2 x 25 lb). Do 20 reps.

    5. (4 x 45 lbs) - 2 on each side. Do 10 reps.

    6. After you’re all done, do a drop set. Basically everything you just did, but in reverse, til there are no weights left on the plate. You can rest between sets.

  2. Squats

    1. Start with just the bar x 20 reps

    2. 2 x 10 lbs (one on each side). Do 20 reps

    3. Add 10 lbs on each side. Do 20 reps.

    4. Keep adding 10 lbs on each side and continue with 20 reps until you can only do 10.

    5. At your heaviest weight of which you can only do 10 reps, rest for a few minutes. My current heaviest weight is 50 lbs each side (100 lbs + the bar)

    6. Put on a good fire pumping song for a drop set!

    7. Dropset (this helps if you have a friend to remove the weights but if you don’t, it’s okay, you can do it yourself if you’re on the Smith machine). Starting at the heaviest weight, do 5 reps. Remove one weight from one side. 5 reps. Remove one weight from the alternating side. 5 reps. Repeat continually removing weights until you get down to 20 lbs on both sides (40 lbs total). Do 10 reps. Then remove each weight doing 10 reps each set. When you get to 10 lbs on both sides, do 20 reps and continue removing weights and 20 reps until the bar is left. Finish strong with 20 reps on just the bar. No rest between sets until you’re all done.

  3. Stiff legged deadlifts

    • 3 sets x 20 reps at 25 lbs on each side.

  4. Leg extension

    • 3 sets of 20 reps at the heaviest weight you can finish 20 reps at.

  5. Leg curls

    • 3 sets of 20 reps at the heaviest weight you can finish 20 reps at.

  6. Leg push down on assisted dip machine

    • 3 sets of 20 reps each leg, alternating legs at 55 lbs, 70 lbs, 85 lbs.

  7. Hip Adduction

    • 3 sets of 20 reps at 90 lbs

  8. Hip Abduction

    • 3 sets of 20 reps at 90 lbs

  9. Lunges

    1. Back and forth across the room with 10 lbs weights in each hand = 1 set.

    2. Do 3 sets.

Back

  • I do back 2-3 times a week, usually right after I do legs since if my lower body is sore, I’ll work on my upper body.

  1. Pulldown machine

    1. Start at the lowest weight. 20 reps.

    2. Increase in weight x 20 reps per set until you can only do 10 reps. Rest in between sets. My current max is 85 lbs.

  2. MTS pulldown (alternating sides)

    1. Start at the lowest weight. 20 reps per arm.

    2. Increase in weight x 20 reps per set until you can only do 10 reps. My current max is 70 lbs.

  3. MTS row (alternating arms)

    1. Start at the lowest weight. 20 reps per arm.

    2. Increase in weight x 20 reps per set. I currently only go up to 50 lbs.

  4. Row machine

    1. Start at the lowest weight. 20 reps per arm, then 20 reps both arms together = one set. (i.e. right arm x 20, left arm x 20, pull both arms x 20)

    2. Increase in weight until you can only do 10 reps at the end with both arms.

  5. Deadlifts (Adding weights and then drop set, then heaviest weight, one rep each)

    1. This is the same as the squats above. 20 reps, adding weight each time to BOTH sides until you get to your heaviest weight and then dropset, removing weights alternating sides until just the bar is left.

    2. Then I do 1 rep with heavy weights

      1. 2 x 45 lbs

      2. (2 x 45 lbs) + (2 x 25 lbs)

      3. (2 x 45 lbs) + (2 x 25 lbs) + (2 x 5 lbs)

      4. My goal is to build my strength back up to being able to deadlift two 45 lb plates on both sides again (4 x 45 lbs)

  6. Assisted dips machine(I superset this with the next exercise, the assisted pull-ups)

    • Assisted dips: x 20 reps at 55 lbs

    • Assisted pull-ups x 20 reps at 55 lbs

    • Do 3 sets. Rest between sets.

  7. Back extensions

    • 3 sets x 20 reps. Remember to squeeze your butt at the top.

  8. Ropes - pull-ups

    • 3 sets of 10 reps.

  9. Battle ropes

    • 3 sets of 15-30 seconds. Try to increase your time each set until failure.

  10. Rope pull

    • 3 sets of 30 seconds. Try to increase your time each set until failure.

Chest

  • I do this maybe once a week if that, and very lightly. I’m not trying to expand my chest so I go very light. I only do chest to even out my workouts and because I can’t do legs and back every day. It’s just to give the rest of my sore body a break but still get a workout in, even if light.

  1. Chest press machine

    • 3 sets x 20 reps (1 set at 10 lbs, 2 sets at 25 lbs)

  2. MTS chest press

    • 3 sets x 20 reps (1 set at 10 lbs, 2 sets at 20 lbs)

  3. Pectoral Fly

    • 3 sets x 20 (1 set at 30 lbs, 35 lbs, 40 lbs)

  4. Chest press flat bench on smith machine

    1. 20 reps, just the bar.

    2. 2 x 2.5 lbs (one on each side) x 20 reps

    3. 2 x 5 lbs. 20 reps.

    4. 2 x 7.5 lbs (5 + 2.5). 20 reps

    5. 2 x 10 lbs. 20 reps

    6. 2 x 12.5 lbs (10 + 2.5). 10 reps

  5. Chest press incline on smith machine

    1. Kick the flat bench up one notch so it’s on an incline. Start with just the bar and do the same weight increase as flat bench chest press workout until you can only do 10 reps.

  6. Chest pushdowns on assisted dip machine

    1. 3 sets x 20 reps at 40 lbs.

Shoulders

  • I usually do this right after chest since chest is fairly fast to get through and you’re already on the smith machine anyway. If no smith machine is available, you can do this with a barbell and free weights instead. Works the same way. My shoulder routine is also very light because I suck at upper body. But I’m also not looking to get huge shoulders. So I just do light weight and higher reps. If you’re looking to build, then go heavier.

  1. Super super set (Squeeze butt during entire set except for bent over lateral raises)

    1. Smith machine shrugs (can increase to 2.5 lbs to both sides)

    2. Smith machine upright rows (can increase to 2.5 lbs to both sides)

    3. Free weight shrugs (10 lb weights)

    4. Free weight bent over lateral raises (10 lb weights)

    5. Free weight front raises (10 lb weights)

    6. Do all of the above with no rest = 1 set. Then rest and do 2 more sets for a total of 3.

  2. Shoulder press

    • 3 sets at 10 lbs

  3. MTS Shoulder press (front and back)

    • 3 sets at 10 lbs sitting forward

    • 3 sets at 10 lbs sitting backward

  4. Assisted dips machine (this is the same as the back. It works the shoulders too so I repeat this on shoulder day. I superset the dips and the pull-ups together no rest)

    1. Assisted dips x 20 reps at 55 lbs

    2. Assisted pull-ups x 20 reps at 55 lbs

    3. Do 3 sets. Rest between sets.

  5. Front raises with wheel 5-5-5s

    1. Grab a 10 lb wheel. Raise them in front of them 5 reps to shoulder level continuously. Rest for 2 seconds. Raise them again 5 reps. Rest 2 seconds. Raise them again 5 reps.

    2. Do 3 sets. Rest 15 seconds between sets.

  6. Lateral raise machine

    1. 3 sets of 20 raises at 10 lbs

Arms

  • I do arms maybe once a week because like chest, I’m not trying to get big arms. I’m just doing it to give the rest of my body a rest and to round myself out. I also don’t go too heavy because my arms are too big for my liking to begin with. I prefer them to look a little softer and feminine but I inherited my dad’s arms so here we are. Welcome to the gun show.

  1. Cable pulleys one hand

    1. Overhand - 3 sets x 20 reps (5 lbs, 7.5 lbs, 10 lbs)

    2. Underhand - 3 sets (5 lbs, 7.5 lbs, 7.5 lbs)

  2. Cable pulley dual rope tricep extensions

    • 3 sets x 20 reps at 15 lbs

  3. Bicep curl

    • 20 reps at 10, 20, 30, 40 lbs

  4. Tricep extension

    • 20 reps at 10, 20, 30 lbs

  5. Tricep press

    • 20 reps at 40, 50, 60, 70 lbs

  6. Skullcrushers + chest presses superset

    • 20 reps skullcrushers + 20 reps chest press

    • Do 3 sets. 1 with 20 lb barbell, 2 with 30 lb barbell.

  7. 21s - 7,7,7

    • 7 bottom, 7 up top, 7 bottom to top = 1 set

    • 3 sets

  8. Tricep kickbacks

    • 3 sets of 20 reps each arm. 10 lb weight.

  9. Free weights bicep curls, increasing weights

    • I basically sit on a bench curling free weights til I can only do 10 reps. (10 lbs, 12.5 lbs, 15 lbs, 17.5 lbs, 20 lbs, 25 lbs)

Abs

  • Honestly don’t do abs much because abs are made in the kitchen. It’s more diet than exercise on this one and it’s so true. I used to do abs in the beginning but then I stopped. Since I stopped, and just focused on diet, I’ve seen more results. You can add on abs if you want more definition in your six-pack but I’m not looking for that. I just want a flat stomach and to not look bloated. I’m not greedy.

  1. Leg lifts on mat: 50 reps x 3 sets

  2. Planks x 90 seconds x 3 sets.

  3. Crunches x 50 x 3 sets

  4. Sit-ups x 20 x 3 sets

  5. Trunk twists x 50 x 3 sets

  6. Leg lifts on captain’s chair x 20 reps x 3 sets

Cardio

  • It’s not necessary to do this everyday but I personally do every day after lifting if I have time. I try to make sure I always have 30 min-1 hour left to finish with cardio. But don’t be crazy like me if you hate cardio. Aim for 2-3 times a week if you can. I used to hate it but ironically I grew to really like it when I started training for the half marathon and I told myself I would stop after but I haven’t seemed to fall off that wagon yet so why get off? I just do one of the following after lifting. Usually it's just running but sometimes I vary it up. If my legs are sore, I'll do the bike or ligh power walking. The elliptical is also easier on the knees. The stairmaster I've only recently started. I usually HATE stairs so I avoided this machine for the longest time since joining the gym. Recently though I'll admit it's not so bad after getting used to stairs on my cruise trip.

  1. 15-30 minutes stairs

  2. 1 hour bike.

  3. 30 min- 1 hour running outside or on treadmill (try to do 5k or work toward 5k)

  4. 30 min-1 hour elliptical

  5. 1 hour power walking

There is no rule or anything to these routines I do. Yes, I know there are other ways and other routines I can try that might be ‘better’ or whatever, but it’s just what my trainer had me do and I got used to. They’re all old school stuff but effective and everything seems to be working and I’m getting the results I’m looking for. It’s been two years now but remember, results take time. Rome wasn’t built in a day, you’re not going to wake up with the perfect body overnight. Changes are gradual and small but over time, you’ll definitely see it. It’s the same thing with weight gain. I didn’t see how bad I was spiraling right away. It took a year or two until I finally really looked at myself and woke up and realized I wasn’t fitting right in my clothes anymore.

I don’t do everything on each list every time, but I try to get as many done in a session as time allows and I try to make sure I do the heaviest/hardest ones to make my workout count. Like for legs, I’ll make sure I do the leg press and squats definitely. I don’t worry about the leg extension/leg curl/hip adduction/hip abduction machines as much if I can’t get to them. I try to aim for about 1-2 hours lifting and 30 min-1 hour cardio.

An example of a weekly schedule:

  1. Monday - Legs & Cardio

  2. Tuesday - Back & Cardio

  3. Wednesday - Chest & Shoulders & Cardio

  4. Thursday - Arms & Cardio

  5. Friday - Legs & Cardio

  6. Saturday - Back & Cardio

  7. Sunday - Stretching & Cardio - 10k run

I’ll alternate and substitute based on how my body is feeling and how much time I have to expend for the gym that day. If one part is still sore and needs more recovery time, I’ll work on something else. This is also why I personally don’t do full body workouts and try to focus on one body part at a time. While one body part rests, I can work out a different part that day. If my whole body is sore, I’ll be more discouraged to not work out at all and take an extra day or two to rest and then fall off the wagon because it’s that quick to fall off. And yes I know rest days are important. I do have rest days sometimes, but I usually put them on days when I have plans where I’m going to be out or in the city or something so I can’t fit a workout in. But for the most part I try to work out every day. I try to get at least 10-20k steps in a day and at least 1 hour of active time logged into my Samsung health via walking or running. If I’m working that day, I try to workout every morning before I have to be at work. If weather doesn’t permit me to get to the gym or whatever, I’ll pop in my Insanity videos and get a HIIT workout in at home. I don’t find HIIT workouts to be as enjoyable as lifting though, personally, which is why I stopped doing Insanity. But they’re good every once in a while when I get strapped for time or can’t get somewhere. You can get a lot done working out for just 20-40 minutes in your own home.

I’m going to stress here to take pictures as much as you can and as often as you can because if you’re anything like me and a slave to the numbers on the scale, these photos help A LOT when I’m feeling defeated. The numbers on the scale are only a small snapshot and don’t accurately reflect everything. What I mean is, it’ll say you weigh X amount of pounds or kilograms, but it doesn’t tell you what that’s comprised of in terms of body fat percentage, bone density, water weight, muscle, etc. If you look up weightlifting vs cardio, you can find a lot of photos of people who are the same weight but their body composition is different (see pic below, it’s not a pic of me just an example I googled). The scales will not show you this and thus leave you feeling discouraged. My goal for 2020 is to reshape how I view myself through the scales and no longer be a slave to the scales. I want to eventually stop weighing myself as often as I do. Realistically I’ll never stop weighing myself because I’m a person who always goes by measurable statistics, but the goal is to be less harsh on myself if I’m not X lbs. I want to reprogram my head into being okay with what I see on the scale because I should trust what I am doing on a daily basis in terms of working out, eating right and showing up for myself. This is the next step in my fitness journey, I feel.

these-girls-are-proof-that-fitness-and-weight-loss-are-separate-things-25-photos-25.jpg

And I know this sounds a little backwards but along with weighing myself less, at one point, I also want to get rid of my current scale and replace it with a body analyzer scale. I know they’re not the most accurate, but it’ll provide a ballpark snapshot/rough estimate of where my body is water weight, muscle and fat percentage-wise. I’m hoping it’ll give me better peace of mind but who knows, watch it make me even crazier. It’s funny because I’ve been using my dinky drugstore scale for the past 5 years when I really should’ve gotten the body analyzer scale instead but I’ve been too cheap to dish out for one.

Here’s to the next step in this journey!
