Rosé Mansion 2.0

July 18, 2019

If you’re a frequent NYC pop-up attendee, the wildly popular Rosé Mansion from last summer is back and with brand new rooms as well as some newly upgraded fan favorites like the floral bathtub room (there’s now 3 to keep line congestion down!) and an even bigger and fuller champagne ball pit. At first I hesitated when I heard it was coming back because I didn’t want to repeat the same pop-up and walk through. But I was invited back by the pop-up itself so I figured why not? Let’s have some fun and see the difference. (You can read about last year’s experience and photos here.)

So. Let’s cut to the chase, I can honestly say they did a beautiful job with the second rendition. I would definitely say this pop-up is worth the price. A lot of quality work was put into it, they collaborated with many different artists to put the rooms together, and you get your money’s worth with all the tastings as well as plenty of photo ops. I’ve been to a lot of pop-ups that are flops looking like someone’s dorm room decoration and rip-offs for what they charge for admission and this is definitely not one of them. The entire exhibit is actually pretty educational, teaching you about the history and process of making rose wine and all the different kinds around the world. Another con of pop-ups that make me wary of them is the lack of good lighting for optimal photo taking. But again, Rosé actually paid attention to this and placed spotlights in a lot of photo areas, which I noticed and appreciated very much as a big pop-up goer.

So where do we start? You mysteriously enter from the side of the building of the Manhattan mall and queue up for an elevator that transports you to the second floor where your adventure awaits. You walk through a neon tunnel which drops you into the “boarding area.” Here you can seamlessly “check your bag” aka drop off any bags you have so you can walk through the exhibit with just your phone and camera, not having to worry about throwing your belongings off the side to snap a photo at every location. I loved this as this was a nice touch to the flight theme. This room was even modeled like a cute pink boarding area with airport seats, luggage, a boarding gate, old school telephones, and a big sign showing arrivals and departures. There was so many photo opportunities before even signing in to the actual pop-up itself.

Signing in was also easy and seamless. You get scanned in, sign a waiver and then wait about 2-3 minutes before you enter a room with quick instructions on how to move about the pop-up via a cute “in-flight” video, just like you would before taking off. After, you move down two cute tunnels (again, two to help with traffic congestion before moving forward) through a forest of huge purple bouncy balls (to mimic grapes) before arriving at a table where you are given your Rosé Mansion wine glass, which you’re to bring with you through the entire exhibit to receive your rosé samples. There are 8 different wines to try from and each pour is a pretty generous helping, in my opinion. But if you’re a lightweight like me and can’t finish your wine before the next tasting, fear not, every station has a small bucket for you to pour your wine into before getting a new pour. And oh yes, full disclosure, I’m not a big drinker so I was here totally for the Instagrammable experience of the pop-up, not the actual drinking part, but I did partake in sips for actual tasting and my favorite rose would have to be the Cleopatra room.

After given your glass (it’s actually just plastic so don’t worry about dropping and breaking it), you’ll move through a series of different themed rooms with a lab, chairs, painted walls, vanities, a garden, painted optical illusion floor, a floor quiz helping you select what rosé you’ll like best to try, a giant cake to boomerang the perfect confetti pop-up and of course, the ball pit that completes every pop-up. At the end, it drops you into “Roséland” where you can relax for as long as you want before leaving. There’s a rosé bar as well as a taco bar if you’re still thirsty or hungry or both, a picnic area for doing exactly that, and even more Instagrammable opportunities. This is also the “baggage claim” area where you can retrieve any bags you checked in earlier. There are also ample amount of bathrooms located around here and in 2019 fashion, gender neutral and cutely decorated.

The iconic chandelier swing is located near the exit, as well as a similar giant throne chair from last year. There’s also a cute lawn chair photo op and a “Hollywood” Rosé Mansion sign. The space is huge and there’s plenty to do. The only con I really found was the chandelier swing at the end wasn’t being monitored by staff like the rooms in the exhibit were. Everything near the exit after the ball pit is at your leisure and not timed. This was both good and bad. The good is you can possibly take longer to get the right photo/boomerang. The con is so can everyone else. So the line for this can take up to an hour even with just 6 girls in front of you. Of course, everyone is entitled to their own time, but some people take longer than others and some people do get a little rude about it, which is exactly the same problem I had the first year at Rosé Mansion at the bathtub room. I did notice a security guy nearby but his job wasn’t really to facilitate the line. The only thing he would probably do is step in, were an altercation were to occur as tensions arose. Unfortunately due to the line problem during my visit, the chandelier did get quite congested and so I wasn’t able to get a good shot by the chandelier swing, which is probably one of the most coveted money shots of the entire exhibit, hence why there was a line here and not so much at all the other spots around the exit.

Overall though I wouldn’t let missing the chandelier affect my experience. The pop-up alone is huge with much to do so take your time as you walk through. Give yourself two hours if you want optimal gramming, I would say and practice a lot of patience. And definitely come with a friend who has a good eye for photos and knows how to work that boomerang. I love that the space is much bigger than last year’s so you never feel like someone is on top of you. It’s also very well conditioned and comfortable. I take note of this because Candytopia was held here and it was a sauna walking through that pop-up so it got uncomfortable at a certain point, causing you to walk through it pretty quick just to get out of the heat.

So the final verdict. It’s definitely a different experience than last years, which is nice because it doesn’t feel like a carbon copy but an actual sequel to it’s predecessor. Like I didn’t feel like I was walking through the exact same pop-up again is my point. So if you enjoyed the mansion last year, then you’ll love this one too.

For those new to Rosé, or pop-ups in general, my advice would be to bring a friend or two, and encourage your group to dress up! You’ll have a blast. Like all pop-ups, tickets are required to purchase ahead of time and are time-slotted. Prices differ according to the time and day you choose to visit, and range from $35 to $45. I went on a weekend so it was busier so that’s probably my own downfall so I would definitely recommend visiting on a weekday if you can to save money and for optimal photo time when it’s less crowded so you won’t feel rushed. Your photos will come out much nicer this way and your boomerangs will be bomb. And oh yes, you have to be 21+ to enter. Everyone in your party included, whether or not they choose to drink. The new Rose Mansion is located at 111 W32nd St, New York, New York 10001 and you can purchase tickets here.

Drug Life

July 10, 2019

Once upon a time I wanted to be in the fashion world career-wise. But I chose pharmacy because my parents would only allow me to choose something in healthcare. And pharmacy was the least-invasive career when it came to coming in contact with patients. I don’t have the stomach for dealing with blood, bodily fluids and all the grossness that comes with healthcare. I didn’t even enjoy pharmacy at first. Pharmacy school wasn’t a great motivator in reassuring me I was on the right path either. And then corporate retail life made me hate people even more.

But there were a select few patients and moments in my short 6 year stint in retail that made me actually like being a pharmacist. I found I actually do enjoy helping people when I can and I do like being able to make a difference in someone’s life and I appreciate when it is recognized. A lot of people don’t think of their pharmacist in the chain of events when it comes to healthcare and it’s not hard to understand why. We’re the little guy. The last person you see on your day of doctor visits and of course, by then, you’re tired, angry, frustrated. Being told something isn’t covered, it needs a prior authorization, a drug is not in stock, or your prescription simply isn’t ready yet is really the last thing you want to hear after being in the doctor’s office all day waiting, then getting blood drawn or labs taken, seeing a specialist, getting an x-ray, etc. At that point, you see the pharmacist as the enemy. The gatekeeper withholding the antidote to your problems. Delaying your care. Unfortunately, we’re more commonly and incorrectly viewed as cashiers instead of healthcare professionals. The added drive-thru doesn’t exactly help to build respect to the profession either, but rather further tarnish people’s view of us by equating a prescription drop-off and pick-up to that of picking up fast food. The drive-thru is supposed to be there for convenience for those who have trouble getting out of their car or whatever their reason may be. But instead it’s abused and expected to be used for speediness, as if filling your important life-saving medication was the same as putting together your burger and fries.

I can’t speak for all pharmacists but I can speak for myself and my fellow pharmacist friends that I do know. We DO care. We actually spend a lot of time on the phone trying to resolve the issues that we encounter when trying to fill your script. We’re racked with anxiety when we hit a wall and we can’t get in touch with your doctor, your insurance company or you to keep you informed and decide the next course of action. We actually do try to exhaust our resources to find a solution before you come back to the pharmacy. We try to offer you alternatives best when we can, to try and minimize as much as we can, the interruption in care. But we can only do so much. Especially when the insurance we have on file isn’t current even though the patient claims time and time again “it’s the same card it’s always been,” only to find out you were sent another card hidden away in your wallet with some extra billing group codes we weren’t aware of. Especially when the phone number you left with us on file isn’t a working number so we can’t contact you properly before you arrive to inform you of the roadblocks. We will fight on the phone with your insurance company to try and get you your prescription approved so you can be on your merry way.

There is a lot going on behind the scenes than you know. Contrary to what most people think, we don’t just “slap a label on it.” Depending on the volume of the pharmacy, given it’s location, population, resources and inventory, as little as 10 scripts can be filled a day or as many as 3000 scripts can be filled a day. So it can get pretty busy and challenging to keep up with as we manually enter in scripts and fill orders, checking to make sure your info is current and correct, and then making sure the drug lines up with the diagnoses, and that the dose, directions, and everything else the doctor specified is correct. Yes, we make sure your doctor didn’t make a mistake and try to poison you. You wouldn’t believe how many errors happen all the time that we have to correct. And half the battle sometimes is reading the damn script, that is, before e-scripts took over written scripts. But even e-scripts are not error proof. Yes, even technology can have its faults. Sometimes the doctor doesn’t send it to the correct pharmacy because there’s multiple CVS’s in town and he didn’t select the correct locale. Sometimes the doctor just automatically resends the last script he ordered for you instead of correctly entering the new dose he wants you to start. Sometimes there’s a delay in transmission so we don’t receive it right away. Whatever the case is, I can guarantee you the pharmacy isn’t working against you. Our job is NOT to make your life harder because think about it, we’re not exactly standing there purposely picking a fight so that you will stand there and rip us a new one as you berate us and make us your human punching bag for the next 15 minutes. It’s not in our favor to make your day harder because it would simply in turn just make our own day worse. We’re not here for this. Truly.

I haven’t worked retail in years but I’ll be honest, sometimes I do miss it. Will I ever go back? Most likely not, I don’t miss it that much, but I do miss the teamwork and camaraderie I had with my colleagues, both pharmacists and technicians and even the front store employees who helped me immensely from time to time when I really needed it. I miss the patients who made it worthwhile too. The ones who would stick up for you when they saw a rude patient trying to go off on you. The ones who would come in and bring me flowers just because. The ones who saw how crazy my day had been and bring me a pizza pie because they recognized how hard my team worked to keep the ship afloat. The ones who would always bring cookies for Christmas because we were like family to them. I miss the workflow too because I’m such a workaholic. As sadistic as it sounds, I loved coming in, fixing the entire queue of problems, printing all the scripts out, piling my baskets sky high and then racing through the bays to pull all the drugs, counting them out and filling the scripts, verifying them and then even racing my techs as we competed to see who could return all the drugs back to their bays in record time. And when the queue was clear, we’d rejoice, sit back and shoot the shit.

But again, I repeat, I do not speak for all pharmacists. I am aware there are some out there who are not as professional, compassionate, helpful, ethical or hardworking. I have encountered the lazy and the slow. And the apathetic. I can’t speak for them. I can only speak for myself and the amazing people I’ve met and worked with that have helped shape me into the pharmacist I am today. And even though I did not go into this wanting to be a pharmacist, I still abide by the Hippocratic Oath both in practice and in my everyday life. Why? Because the people I’ve met and have known personally, both patients and colleagues have a story to tell. They are all people struggling through something and after knowing their stories, you’d never think they went through what they went through. They could’ve came out bitter like everyone else. They could be mean, nasty, unnecessarily rude to the world. They could’ve held a grudge. They can easily walk around with a chip on their shoulder. But no, they’re happy and smiling. They swallow their bitterness and don’t allow it to consume their lives. Because pain and sorrow is not all that they are. There is so much more to these great people I’ve met than what life has thrown at them. And these are the people who inspire me to always do the right thing, to keep moving forward and have faith in people that there are still others out there with a good heart. Who recognize what you are doing and who appreciate the hell out of you.

I swear to fulfill, to the best of my ability and judgment, this covenant:

I will respect the hard-won scientific gains of those physicians in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such knowledge as is mine with those who are to follow.

I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures which are required, avoiding those twin traps of overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism.

I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon's knife or the chemist's drug.

I will not be ashamed to say "I know not," nor will I fail to call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed for a patient's recovery.

I will respect the privacy of my patients, for their problems are not disclosed to me that the world may know. Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given me to save a life, all thanks. But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of my own frailty. Above all, I must not play at God.

I will remember that I do not treat a fever chart, a cancerous growth, but a sick human being, whose illness may affect the person's family and economic stability. My responsibility includes these related problems, if I am to care adequately for the sick.

I will prevent disease whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure.

I will remember that I remain a member of society, with special obligations to all my fellow human beings, those sound of mind and body as well as the infirm.

If I do not violate this oath, may I enjoy life and art, respected while I live and remembered with affection thereafter. May I always act so as to preserve the finest traditions of my calling and may I long experience the joy of healing those who seek my help.

So, if you never knew what your pharmacy does, please know that there is a lot more going on behind the scenes than you’ll ever know. Not in just pharmacy but healthcare in general. I focus on pharmacy because duh, I’m a pharmacist. My point is that it’s a very underrated and underappreciated profession for both the pharmacists and techs involved so please, please, please, love and appreciate your pharmacy. I may not be in retail anymore but I still feel the pain for my retail peeps of what they go through daily. They don’t ever get the appreciation they deserve compared to other healthcare professionals because we’re usually just seen as “clerks.” Especially since we’ve had our dignity taken away and replaced with a drive-thru, further damaging the image and belittling us to fast food service windows, when your medication is of the utmost importance and should in no way but rushed and half-assed, just to meet numbers. There are real people working behind that counter to make sure you get the right medication. They spent countless hours fighting on the phone with your insurance, calling your doctors to work on your prior authorizations, cheaper alternatives when your drug isn’t covered, backordered or discontinued, and refills to try and get your script filled on time. They’re there to check your allergies against your medication profile, counsel you on new regimens, intervene when necessary due to interactions, and answer your questions to the best of their abilities. They come in early, stay late, skip meal breaks, forgo bathroom breaks and do so many things behind the scenes you’ll never realize to make sure you have what you need. And they can only do so much. I know people have their pharmacy complaints but trust that there are people who are doing their absolute best even when their own day is going really shitty and they have their own hardships, to deal with and have to hold it together for 8+ hours.

A fellow pharmacist friend shared a reddit post with me earlier this week that re-ignited my still ever burning hatred for CVS and the abuse incurred there. I’m sad to hear the company’s shady tactics and the illegal things they do while hiding it under the guise of “policy and procedures” have only gotten worse and more abusive. I wish they would one day change their ways, revolutionize the pharmacy and how they treat their employees but unfortunately money grubbing companies like that only care about their 6th vacation home, not the happiness and welfare of people who work hard tirelessly for them day in and day out, before opening and after closing. If they did, I would gladly go back to retail, but I know it’s not in the cards in the foreseeable future. Until then, I really hope my friends who are still stuck in retail and any fellow colleagues still trapped there, make it out one day and find something better.

Thank you to all the people I’ve met and have worked with in the healthcare industry who have helped shape me into the pharmacist I am today. I no longer work for the 3 lettered red devil but I do feel the pain for all those that are still stuck in corporate retail. You guys are total superstars.

Checkpoint

July 6, 2019

It’s July! We’re 6 months into 2019 and I figured I’d check in on myself to see how I’m doing. Well, the answer is absolutely terrible, lol. I’ll be honest, I don’t really know where my motivation and ambition went from last year. Maybe I peaked from my weight loss journey and now that I’m maintaining, I’m just being lazy and getting by. It’s really terrible. But I don’t really know how to get back on the horse. Motivation is a really fickle thing.

Goals for 2019

  1. Maintain a 105-110 lb weight range and a sustainable diet and exercise balance.

    • Sadly, I’ve been maintaining a 112-115 weight range lately and I can’t seem to make the scales move down. I’m rubberbanding but it’s a bad spot I’m in. I can’t lie, I really do hate the numbers on the scale but I actually really like how my body looks in the mirror lately compared to photos from when I was 105. I have some more definition than before so it doesn’t make me too mad and allows me to take it a little easier on myself despite my frustration. But I’m not entirely clueless as to what the problem is. My diet when I was in weight loss mode was very strict. Now that I’m maintaining, I’m still eating healthy and small portions but I do indulge every now and then, more often than when I was losing. So honestly, my diet is my biggest challenge. But at the same time, I do know that I should be adopting a sustainable diet, which is why I am a little more forgiving on myself. I don’t want to entirely restrict myself from food because I know that’s how you rubberband severely when you finally do get to indulge. So for now, I’m learning to balance a clean diet with some cheats every now and then. I just don’t want to spiral too far out of control and pack that weight back on. It’s not an easy road trying to lose. It takes a lot of discipline and consistency, and while it’s summer, I do want to look good but I still want to be able to enjoy myself.

  2. Run a half marathon.

    • The one goal I completed and early on. The half marathon I conquered victoriously! Which is good and bad in itself. It set myself up for an even bigger mountain to climb. I signed up to do all 3 races next year. I’m going to regret this come February 21st, 2020. And even more when I finally step up to conquer a full marathon. Baby steps though.

  3. Finish the spare room.

    • The spare room is still a work in progress BUT we’re actually working on it now! We cleared it out and put in a bed and little vanity table. The husband even repaired a little drawer to put in the room. This is more progress than we made in the past year so hey, celebrate the small wins, right?

  4. Italy in the spring? or Paris in the fall? Disneyland for Halloween, Disneyworld for NYE possibly.

    • Unfortunately, international travel is not in the cards this year. I wish I could add Italy to my list but in the end, it doesn’t feel right just yet. But I’m in no rush. I ended up going to California this May and scratching off Disneyland for a quick spring vacation. And I have a Disney cruise booked for October. So this ship has changed its course from the original goals but I’m actually not mad about it.

  5. Learn to drive stick.

    • Learn to drive stick/motorcycle. If we’re being honest, I haven’t done a thing towards either of this. I’ve gotten lazy but it’s also because I have such limited time with the boy as is with our limited days off together. One day though. Again, no rush. It’s just a goal I’d like to try and meet one day but no imminent need.

  6. Finally pick up photography.

    • I mean, I got a camera and two lenses. But if I’m being honest, I did zilch research into looking how to properly use it so far. I’ve been relying on my husband and sister to work their magic taking my photos for me. I should take the time to learn though. I feel like it’s not as hard as I make it out to be. I just have to sit and put in the work, like everything else.

  7. Learn how to drive a motorcycle.

    • see 5

  8. Take more photos with the boy!

    • I did another cute photoshoot with the boy at Disneyland! I love those photos. Hopefully we can get more photos done together on our cruise vacation.

  9. Work with more creatives.

    • I got the opportunity to work with a few new people so far this year. And I love how those photos came out. It’s really great when you get to work with people on a similar wavelength. I’m digging how my portfolio is growing. My blog is also slowly helping me open doors and new opportunities. It feels good to grow, even if it’s just a small step at a time. I do feel like my work is slowly paying off.

  10. Finish my pharmacy CEs early.

    • Lastly, my CEs. Yeah. I’m not going to talk about this. I’ve done absolutely nothing towards this. But I’m going to try and end the year on a good note and make this a goal I actually finish. Fingers crossed but no promises.

Check in with yourself. Be honest. How are YOU doing with YOUR goals. What are some steps you can take to actively put yourself in the right direction? Are you actively working on them? Can you do better?
