A Thousand Miles

June 6, 2021

They say a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. It’s a really old saying and so cheesy and cliché but it still rings 100% true.

In 2018, I hit a low. I’ve wrote about this several times before. And here I am today, reinforcing that a fitness journey does not happen overnight. You do NOT gain weight overnight. So you will NOT lose it overnight. There are also a lot of things you learn over time, and not just in a week, a month or even a year. Some things you will take several years to learn, and depending on your fitness goals, you will learn they also take years for your results to come through. But that’s why they also say another cliché, cheesy saying: It’s a marathon, not a sprint. No matter what your fitness goal is, you will learn through multiple trial and error that the true process takes time. Commitment. Dedication. Perseverance. Patience. There are no shortcuts.

You will also learn there is no one solution for everything. What works for one person may not work for you. This rings true when it comes to nutrition and diet, as well as the type of exercises you try out. But that’s why it’s important to try things. To see what works and doesn’t work. To try something else out. To switch things up if you see yourself plateauing.

Speaking of marathons though, I finally bit the bullet and decided to sign up for my first FULL marathon scheduled for September 19. It’s not a Disney race so I’m a little disheartened but I really want to complete this goal and with Disney races in limbo, I really felt like I was falling behind on my training as I’ve been having no motivation to keep up with it. I’m scared because with this date set, I only have 15-16 weeks to train for it, but I think this is also what I need to kick my ass back into gear with my motivation problem. I do really well when I have structured schedules, deadlines and goals set. So I’m hoping this will push me to rise up to the challenge, as I have a strict training schedule to add on mileage in time for the fall. I ran a half marathon on Friday to see if I still had it in me and although it was definitely still challenging, I made it close to my usual PR so hopefully I can add on one mile a week and get to 26.2 in the next 16 weeks. It’s going to be truly a new journey of a thousand miles for the next 4 months. Fingers crossed! I really want to see this goal through but I'm terrified of the work that I'm going to have to put in over the grueling summer. I know it's going to be hard. But if I can see this through, I’ll be so happy. No one can take that away from me after I make it across the finish line. Well, if I make it.😅

And speaking of journeys, I’m 3 years into this fitness journey I started and I’m still learning. My first year I learned I enjoyed weight lifting. My second year I learned to enjoy long distance running. And this year in an effort to still stay active, but give my legs and knees a rest while races are put on hold and not add too much unnecessary mileage to them, I started getting into pilates home workouts. I’m still getting the hang of them as I do find them challenging but I enjoy that they’re a nice change to my routine that I’ve been getting bored with recently. I enjoy seeing the progress week to week, with my form, my stamina and how long I can last with holding one particular pose that I had trouble with the last time. Every time I try a new workout, I gain a new appreciation in that area of exercise. Just because someone else makes something look graceful and easy, does not mean it is. I’m hoping next year when things are safer and more stuff opens up, that I can find a local dance studio and possibly learn ballet or pole. I’m actually really bad at coordinated stuff like that but I would like to get into it and give it a good effort and see what I can do, as well learn something new.

But today I’m not here to blog about nutrition or the type of workout that helps improve your fitness journey. I’m here to talk about a detail that we don’t often think about that does make a big difference. This single small step on your journey that I want to talk about today is about the work out clothes that inspire you!

In the past 3 years, I’ve acquired a decent amount of activewear in my closet. I used to have just 2-3 outfits I rotated out at the gym and had to do laundry more often. I also only had one pair of sneakers in the beginning. I didn’t care as much cause I was just there to do the work and go home. But as time went on, I dedicated more time to my workouts and learned that a cute outfit really does go a long way and it’s part of the “joy” I’ve found in fitness, staying true to my fashion loving roots. I love a good outfit for my regular day to day life, so why not a good outfit for the gym too since that’s become even more routine day to day. And for me, COLOR is a big part of that. I love a great bright colored outfit. It’s why you rarely see me in black.

In my experience, trying to shop for cute gym clothes, obviously quality will differ from company to company. But staying true to my Asian nature, I refuse to overpay for spandex. I know that some activewear is definitely worth the higher cost for the quality, longevity and how they perform, but I also know that it’s not always worth the price they’re charging, no matter how high. Yes I would like my clothes to last a little longer, but being the impulsive shopper I am sometimes, I do like to get a new outfit every now and then because I like new things, lol. I’m the type of person whose day can easily get cheered up with a new outfit I want to wear right away. So with that said, I prefer the price points to be lower so I can have variety.

Full disclosure, I have never bought or tried Lululemon. It’s been recommended but I’ve yet to find cute colors or styles that suit me, and I just can’t justify their prices for something I’m not totally in love with. Maybe one day, but so far I’ve been pretty happy with the brands I’ve tried out, which I’m going to talk about below and review each brand and my experience.

Black Milk Clothing

One of the earliest brands I wore for the gym before I even started buying gym clothes simply because their leggings are comfortable and good quality. I find their prints to be pretty decent when it comes to being squat proof. They do make an active wear line but I’ve been just wearing their regular printed leggings for the gym and they hold up just fine over the years. They wash without fading too! They look the same today as I got them years ago. Their compressibility varies from legging to legging due to different fabric and such (my muscle leggings are much tighter than my sprinkle leggings, not a bad thing, as the muscle leggings hold everything in nicer and makes my waist look nicer, as opposed to my sprinkle leggings which are more comfortable when I’m running so I don’t feel suffocated.). It all depends on what you like and what you’re going for but overall, I like the brand and their quality.

Buff Bunny

I’ve been wanting to try this brand out for a while but could never justify the price point, and because they hype up their launches to sell out, it’s hard to shop there to get the sizes you want unless you’re a loyal shopper that stalks their launches. I finally bit the bullet and was able to get some things in my sizes but honestly, I would say I’m not entirely sold. I got the Rosa bra, the Revolution bra, the Alpha bra and the Executive pocket short. The Alpha bra is probably my favorite because the back design is really pretty. The Rosa bra is nice and supportive for a simple sports bra and still really flattering and cute on, but the Revolution bra I found disappointing. The back design is just not as cute and I ended up liking the square neck bra from Elite Eleven much more. EE's back design was much simple and overall more flattering from the front and back when worn. The Executive pocket short was too short and kept riding up every time I wore it to work out, or even when I wore them for a simple walk around the neighborhood. This may have been because the sizing was too small as I found their shorts way more compressive than I would have liked but that’s another issue on it’s own. I followed the size chart and the shorts fit but they’re definitely very tight and way more compressive than I would have liked. This would have helped had they included this in their description of the product to let you know to size up. The one unique thing though that I really liked about this company is the removable cups that came with each bra - they matched the color of the bra! They weren’t just white or nude like standard cups and padding that come with sports bras, but matched the color of the fabric. It’s a small detail but I appreciated this as it helps to keep them together when you launder your bras. I will also say the quality does hold up well as they wash just fine, the color stays and everything.

Do You Even

I took a chance on this brand last year when I was relentlessly searching for a cute candy pink gym outfit and they had the perfect shade I was looking for and were on sale. I bought the bra, shorts and leggings. The bra was nice and supportive and I liked this outfit a lot at first but the color did fade a little within the first few washes. It’s still pink, but it seems to be a duller pink than when I first got it so that’s a little disappointing.

Elite Eleven

I found this brand while looking for pastel workout clothes and oh man, this ended up being my current favorite top brand! The fit is perfect and the square neck bra is so so so flattering! I love that it can be worn as a regular crop top outside of working out because it fits like a sports bra but looks like regular clothes as well. It’s got great support, making sure the girls are tucked in but it doesn’t flatten you at all, making everything look super flattering. I can’t say enough about their bras, for real. And they’re at great price points for their quality and versatility, to be honest, especially compared to other brands. I got the matching biker shorts to each bra and I love that their bottoms come in a regular design as well as the scrunch butt ones. I’m not a fan of the scrunch so I’m glad they gave a non-scrunch option. I also found their customer service to be excellent. The first time I ordered, they sent me the wrong size and upon emailing them, they took care of it right away and sent me the right one without having to return the original one! I appreciated that because they are Australia based so return shipping would have been tricky to figure out. I ended up giving the wrong size bra they sent me to my sister and she loved it. Their shipping I also found to be faster than Buff Bunny. I ordered both at the same time and I received my Elite Eleven within a week from Australia while Buff Bunny took 2 weeks, which I found funny since they’re supposed to be US based. When shipping was delayed, I googled the Buff Bunny company and actually found a few bad customer service reviews so that’s a big yikes for me. While I did receive my Buff Bunny order and there were no issues, the reviews I read were enough to make me wary from a future order, as opposed to Elite Eleven, where I’ve ordered from twice now and everything worked out; even when they shipped out the replacement item, I received it rather quickly after they emailed me and took care of everything, no hassles!

Forever 21

For Forever 21’s price point, I actually do like their work out clothes. There are definitely some hit or miss items but if you’re on a budget, they are pretty decent and every so often they have great colors and prints and they offer a lot of basic nice styles for sports bras and matching sets. I still have a lot of items I bought from a few years ago and they’re actually holding up well. Some of their sports bra tops also double well as regular crop tops for everyday wear which I love about a great sports bra.

Hollister

Okay so last winter, I discovered Hollister started their own active wear line through their Gilly Hicks line and omg, I took a chance during their sale and let me tell you I LOVE EVERYTHING. The quality, the softness, the cuteness, the colors, everything. I bought it all up. This season’s colors I’m not so crazy about but last winter was perfection with the brights. I love their styles and quality so I’m hoping next season they come out with more colors I like. They also have sales often so it’s a very affordable line with decent quality for activewear. Color me impressed.

Living Dead Clothing & Poprageous

I’m grouping these two brands together because they’re no longer available. The companies are gone, sadly. And they were actually one of my favorite when it came to activewear because of how unique their prints were. They specialized in cosplay-like designs with their printed activewear. Living Dead Clothing did an Attack on Titan set which is my absolute fave from them along with my old Lollipop Chainsaw, and Poprageous made all the super hero sets that everyone loves at the gym so much - my Deadpool, Spiderman and Captain America were by them. Their quality was amazing because they are still good as new to this very day after multiple washes and wears. The colors are only slightly faded but not by much and everything is squat proof and panty lines proof. I wish both companies were still here today.

Muscle & Donuts

I found this brand last year when quarantine started and took a chance during a sale for their super cute donut crop top, leggings, shorts and cropped tee. Everything is pretty good quality and still hold up so far a year later. The leggings have great compression and are very flattering with their high waist. The shorts I do have an issue with as they do ride up when I run. I think this can be easily fixed if they offered this in a biker short length. The only other issue I found with this brand for me personally was that the pieces I bought were basically the meat of the company. Everything else was not as cute and more on the basic side. So while I recommend the pieces I bought, there isn’t much re-shopability due to limited offerings on designs and releases. They should do more prints and bright fun colors. Their fun donut print leggings are what drew me into them and they should really work more towards that end, especially since that’s their namesake.

Nike

I really only bought their activewear the first year I was shopping for race attire for the Princess Half Marathon because I saw they had a hot pink outfit in the store when I was searching for running sneakers. Their clothing line is really expensive, but I do have to note that they do stand by their product and provide good customer service, which is probably why their products are so expensive. They’ll replace anything or give you your money back if there are any issues. I found the leggings and sports top I bought to be really compressive though, much tighter than I would have preferred so I honestly don’t find myself reaching for my Nike set often when it comes to picking out workout clothes for the day, but that’s just my personal preference. They’re so tight, it flattens me out instead of showing off the glutes I worked hard to sculpt, and my boobs feel like someone wrapped them as tightly as possible to hide they exist. But if you’re someone who needs extra support for the honeys, you might prefer this as they do not stretch out. The quality is definitely there.

Shein

I took a chance on some cheap sports bras to go along with some of my printed leggings and honestly their stuff is hit or miss. Sometimes the bras are terribly made and sometimes they are actually fire. I found their one shoulder bra to be amazing, but their other bras to be just eh. Luckily, they have a good free returns policy.

Victoria’s Secret
I used to buy their sports bras back in college. They’re still decent but I would highly recommend finding a Victoria’s Secret outlet near you if you can. The one near me sells all their sports bras for $19.99 and under, making their ok quality not so bad. I do like that some of their bras are made with a front zip because some days you’re just too sore to lift the damn thing over your head. Not a lot of brands offer this option.

Year of Ours

I took a chance on this brand last year because I simply wanted a sunshine yellow gym outfit. Don’t @ me with the color issue I have when looking for gym clothes, lol. I always look for style and colors first over everything because the fashion bimbo in me cares about looking cute first over comfort, quality and everything else. I did like the color but I don’t believe it is the same brightness today as when I first received it. Their material is a little jersey-like than spandex so that may be why it doesn’t last as long. It definitely isn’t sweat proof because of this detail as well. I loved the set when I received it because of the color but I was disappointed it didn’t have any padding/removable cups so I always have to be wary when working out in public if the gym is cranking up their AC. While I appreciate that it is a women owned brand with ethical production standards, at the high price points their pieces are sold at, their quality just wasn’t cutting it for me. Looking back on this order, I can’t believe I paid $55 for the bra and $72 for the shorts. I did have a coupon for $30 off so it offset the high cost somewhat, but still, the quality is definitely not worth it. I should have continued looking for a yellow set elsewhere, honestly. It’s safe to say, I’m not too crazy about being a return shopper.

In conclusion, I would have to say my current fave brands are Elite Eleven and Hollister when it comes to comfort, price point, versatility and style. Those two are currently hitting all those targets and I would recommend them highly to anyone with my similar body type and concerns when it comes to shopping for cute, affordable gym clothes. I said it once, but I’ll say it again, a really cute outfit really goes a long way. It sounds stupid but it’s really motivational when you look and feel on point. Think about it, when you have a cute outfit planned, you always really look forward to that day, right? It’s the same with working out because then you really want to wear that outfit! Seriously something as little as that will change your whole mood.

What about you? Do you have a favorite tried and trusted brand that you always go back to?

#21DayTone Blogilates Challenge

January 24, 2021

I stumbled upon Blogilates sometime in the past year on Instagram through their algorithm suggesting me more fitness accounts as I strayed away from cosplay and more towards health and fitness. I clicked on follow cause her pages were cute but didn’t know much about her brand. I learned more when she came out with 90 day challenge/365 day post about all the harsh criticism and controversial hate she received when first started the challenge.

It resonated with me because I received similar discouragement when I first decided to lose weight, get healthy and start running. I was told a lot of negative things, which I thought were really ridiculous. While some may have been well-intentioned like the whole “you don’t need to lose weight, you look fine!” and the “running is bad for your toes, they’ll fall off!” , ultimately the decision is up to me on what I choose to do with my body and how I want it to look, whether it be out of vanity, aesthetics or simply overall physical and mental heath. People trying to give you unsolicited input on what they think you should do with YOUR life and body, especially when you’re trying to better yourself, is a lot of horse shit. If you want to try something new, do it. Don’t get discouraged by someone telling you you shouldn’t or that you can’t. Do it twice and take pictures. It doesn’t matter how someone else thinks and feels about YOUR body. It matters that YOU yourself are comfortable in your own skin. (And just a disclaimer here, I’m talking about healthy, sustainable habits, not eating disorders or unhealthy toxic things people doe in the fitness world. For these issues, please seek professional help.)

Back to the point though. Her original post was about how she wanted to change her own eating habits to something more sustainable and tone her body even further than what it already was. She was already thin to begin with and that’s where all the hate came flooding in, accusing her of not being body positive and causing harmful body image. I hate this because I also am considered thin by the general population but in my own skin, I always feel like there’s room for improvement. I’m not looking to lose a lot of weight but I do prefer to be leaner. I just want to eat without looking like I had 3 thanksgivings, okay?!!? And her before and after photos of that challenge were amazing! They weren’t a dramatic change like you see in the heavier weight loss photos but it’s what I deal with on the yo-yo-ing of my own weight. I struggle with trying to maintain my weight at a constant number because it’s very prone to bloat with what I eat. Luckily the holidays are over and I can get back to a regular routine.

Which brings me to my next point. I took her #21daytone challenge she promoted for the new year. I did this for a few reasons. First, I was getting bored with the gym. Despite finally being able to go back to the gym in September because they reopened, I’ve been finding it rather monotonous and not as exciting as it used to be. I needed to switch things up. I needed a change of pace. Secondly, she was promoting her new Target line and this #21daytone was a really freaking smart way of getting people to try new things for free and then ultimately buy her line because she makes them look so fun and cute in her videos. I got suckered into it. Her marketing worked on me. As a person who’s usually skeptical of a lot of fitness subscription things and spending more money, to me, this was a risk-free and cost-free way to try out her workouts. And it was 21 days! I always feel like a 7 day trial is too short to figure out if you like anything so 21 days was perfect. And she sells it so perfectly. 21 minutes for 21 days. Come on!

The app ended up being free to download and the #21daytone challenge was free to access and do. And even if you didn’t want to download the app, the calendar is free to print off her blog and all the videos are available on Youtube, you just have to search them. The app just makes it easier to access with it being all in one place and it tracks your progress and tells how percentage completion and everything. She talks about check marks in every video and something about it, man, those check marks DO feel really freaking good when you finish a workout. I was really able to get behind all this as I was looking for something new and fun to try. And I did say for the new year I wanted to explore new areas of fitness.

And I ended up really freaking loving this challenge. The funny thing is when her Target line first came out, I didn’t plan on buying much because I didn’t feel like the colors fit my aesthetic that much as I’m usually a strictly bright pink girl. But as the workouts went on, every video with her using her equipment sold me more and more. So I ended up picking up quite a few pieces. And I’ve loved them so far. The only thing I didn’t pick up was weights because I thought my 5 pound ones at home would do and hers are honestly quite pricey. But god those gold weights are beautiful. When I finally decided okay, let’s do it, the joke was on me because her marketing strategy worked on everyone doing the challenge. Her entire collection was selling out of stores all over America.

But enough of how I got suckered into her genius marketing ploys.

Today marks the completion of the challenge! Spoilers, I made it through all 21 days! The physical changes in me were minimal, the before pic was due to holiday eating bloat. But the weight on the scale has remained the same. I started at 122 pounds and I’m honestly still at 122, but the photos look different. I got rid of my water weight from eating all the processed, high sugar, high sodium foods during the holiday season and got back to my regular sustainable diet of high protein, complex carbs and lots and lots of water.

So my review:

This was an easy program to follow and understand but is also by no means too easy. It’s user-friendly but the workouts are still definitely challenging. But not enough to intimidate you so if you’re worried about not making it all the way through, don’t. It’s not that terrible. I found it a lot of fun to do and actually surprised myself week to week, as the exercises I used to hate and dread became more doable and more tolerable and actually fun as my endurance, stamina and strength progressed. I learned that I prefer compound exercises to isolation ones. I loved cardio ones and the “all-in-one” workouts. It’s funny because a lot of these reminded me of the Insanity program but not as intense and grueling. It ended up making me actually enjoy home workouts more. I really wish this had been around during the initial lockdown last year. It would have helped me a lot when I was struggling to find my footing with home workouts when gyms were closed. A lot of the moves I was doing then were similar to these workouts too, but I enjoyed that the videos had a timer and you had to push through and not allowed a lot of breaks. It forces you to finish the workout. On my own, I take a lot of breaks and get distracted. Through the #21daytone challenge, I spent my entire time doing the workout and no time scrolling through my phone on rest breaks. That’s probably another thing I need to learn to do. To put my phone down and just do the damn workout. I find it easier to do when I IG live my workouts too because it hold me accountable to finishing the workout, as well as prevent me from scrolling cause well, it’s recording, lol. I physically can’t use my phone. I also loves that she talks to you throughout the workout so it doesn’t feel like you’re just counting down the seconds til it’s over. I feel engaged and immersed in the workout.

I also realized I look forward to my workouts more when I have everything down planned. Instead of going to the gym and just picking a random muscle group to work out and go through the motions for that day, I find it really helpful for me when I pick out my outfit the night before, go over the next day’s workout plan before bed, make a list of goals and check them off throughout the day as I go. Oh yeah, and a really cute outfit really goes a long way. It sounds stupid but it’s really motivational when you look and feel on point. During this challenge, I ended up buying two cute new outfits to match with her Target line aesthetics because I have issues. But it made me really look forward to working out because I really wanted to wear that outfit! Seriously something as little as that will change your whole mood. I also realized I have a lot more workout clothes than I realized, hahaha. When I started in 2018, I was rotating through only a few outfits and doing laundry often. Now I have enough to go through a 21 day program without repeating outfits. Someone please help.

Another pro of this program, although accidental, was that it forced me to give myself rest in between my gym lifting sessions. This was simply because since I am a late riser, I can’t always fit a Blogilates workout, my running and my gym session all-in-one before I have to get to work. And in doing so, it’s actually been improving my lifting, it seems. Maybe because my muscles were finally get a break in between soul crushing sessions, lol. I finally went up in weights on both the leg press and my deadlifts and crushed it! This was really exciting the other day because I was feeling stuck in a plateau for a little bit. The cross training seemed to have really helped. I’m excited to see progress already showing this early in 2021.

And one last thing I learned from this program! It really helps working out with others, even if virtually! I had a group of girls do this challenge with me and I really absolutely LOVED seeing everyone tag me daily as they checked off their workouts. It’s crazy. Watching someone else win really motivates you to do it too and it really has a ripple effect in wanting to encourage other people to win too. I had my morning workout people tag me before I did mine and it pushed me to get up and get it done. And then after that, I would check in throughout the day with my other girls who worked out later. And at the end of the day, I would try to check in with any one last minute to make sure they made time to get their workout in or made a plan to get back on track the next day. I really loved this team of support and accountability. I hope to continue growing and building my community of workout buddies because I really enjoyed engaging with everyone who participated in this challenge with me.

I hope Cassey from Blogilates does more challenges like this throughout the year. For now, I’m going to finish out her January calendar and continue on with her workouts as I’m loving them so far. She even has a 30 days to splits routine! That’s on my goals list so that challenge will definitely help if I can conquer it.

These past 3 weeks taught me a lot. I learned there is so much little things you can do that add up to make a BIG difference in your day. I’m going to start journaling again because Cassey is definitely onto something about those damn checkmarks. And new workout gear! It really motivates you to work out when you’re feeling your outfit and you’re excited to try out a new yoga mat, bands, straps, socks, masssage ball, whatever! Sometimes trying new things is scary because change is scary but sometimes it can also be eye-opening and a lot of fun. I found that workouts that I hated in the first week, I ended up enjoying later on when I saw progress in between weeks! And social media! Sometimes social media can be harmful and toxic to making you feel inadequate and insecure when you compare yourself against other beauty and fitness standards. But sometimes it can also be an extremely powerful tool if you let go of that and use it instead to build a community of like-minded people working towards common goals of health and sharing experiences. I just can not stress enough how much I enjoyed checking in with other girls, tagging each other, resharing stories. It’s really uplifting, empowering and motivating. That domino effect, y’all.

This year, I really want to focus on other fitness goals instead of being fixated on a number on the scale. I want to get more flexible, further my running endurance/stamina and distance beyond 13.1 miles, finally do an unassisted pull-up, possibly take a ballet/dance class and most of all, continue building upon this community of workout buddies.

I need to remind myself that my body does A LOT for me and I need to start valuing it for what it can do, and that it is NOT just a number on a scale. My body’s worth is not and should not be based on a single statistic of body weight. It is incredibly capable of a lot more.

RunDisney 2021 Gone Virtual

September 23, 2020

RunDisney announced today that the January WDW races and the February Princess races for 2021 are going virtual. They will no longer be held in person, and all registrants will have the option of either a refund or converting their registration to a virtual run. They will also re-open up registration this Thursday for anyone interested in signing up for the virtual races if they weren’t able to snag a spot earlier this year when they first went on sale.

What does this mean for me?

I was signed up to do the marathon in January, my first ever full marathon, and all 3 of the Februrary princess races - the 5k, 10k and the half. I just entered week 13 of my marathon training too, and was set to run 15 miles next week for my training. I’m glad they announced this sooner than later before I unnecessarily added on mileage next week for naught. I’ve never gone beyond 13.1 miles before in a run and I was really anxious about the crossover into uncharted waters. Not that I don’t want to do it, but it’s definitely a daunting thing to run that much in a long run. I would have been pretty mad had they announced this 2 weeks later, so right at the break even point of my training, was perfect to avoid unnecessary strain on my legs and avoid risking injury.

I have til October 7th to make my decision but ultimately I think I’m going to withdraw from the now virtual marathon. Why? Honestly, it’s a lot to take on. 26.2 miles to run laps around your neighborhood is brutal. After a certain point, you really do hate yourself running circles around the same route. And a virtual race is simply not the same as an in-person race. Not that I don’t feel accomplished every time I complete a half marathon around my neighborhood, but nothing is ever going to compare to a real race.

There’s running and there’s running in Disney. And it’s really the running in Disney that I really like. Crossing that finish line is the absolute BEST in person. When I run at home, I simply get back to my house when I complete my run, shower, get something to eat and go about the rest of my day. There’s nothing really special about it. But at Disney, there’s absolute magic in the air. I always want to cry every time I cross that damn line. I wish I could describe it and put it into words what it is, that je ne sais quoi, but it simply cannot be replicated with a virtual. Simply put, it just feels amazing. You’re on top of the world. Nothing can stop you. Nothing can take that accomplishment away from you. All the people cheering you on through the entirety of the race from beginning to end, the posters, the high fives, the encouragement, the water/Powerade/food stops, the bands, the fireworks, the character stops, running down Main street, through the CASTLE, oh my god, the castle!

I still remember my first runDisney event. The excitement, the energy, the anticipation, the unknown! It was the most amazing experience and that’s why I keep coming back every year, setting bigger goals each time. This was supposed to be my first full marathon. For some, it would have been their first Disney run, first Dopey, first Goofey, first marathon, first whatever, and I really feel for you. We all know “there will be other events,” but that still doesn’t help much with the disappointment. I can’t offer much consolation. Let me just say this came as no surprise with the state of the world right now, but it’s still heartbreaking to say the least. I understand the decision made to go virtual but I’m still sad about missing out on my first marathon.

BUT! I will say, your training has not been entirely wasted. For some of us, we’ve done things we’ve never done before! We reached new distances, set new PRs, found new running trails, ran more than we’ve ever ran before, learned to run in hard conditions like extreme cold or sweltering heat and even buckets of rain. Last year when I did my first half marathon, I had only done my training runs and the actual race. This year, after I returned from Princess weekend, I continued on with my running and kept up with long runs even through quarantine. I’ve done 6 half marathon runs this year in my neighborhood just because. In the past I would never think to do that because doing one is daunting enough. But I’ve been working towards building my cardio and endurance. Once upon a time a run from my house to the end of the block seemed like forever. And then one day a 5k became my warm-up. And then a 10k. One day, a half marathon will be my warm-up. And that’s how I’ll conquer the Dopey Challenge one day. Step by step, one foot in front of the other.

princess2021

As for the Princess races, I was thinking about forgoing them as well but then I saw the damn medals and damnit, now I want them. But at least with the Princess races, I know I can do them because I already completed the challenge when I set this as my goal earlier this year. I’ve done it once so I know I can do it again just fine. So I’m staying on to do the Princess virtuals to add those medals to my collection. I figured why not since I started collecting them since 2018, might as well keep with the continuity so I can keep building my wall of medals. That Rapunzel medal has my heart anyway, let’s be real.

But for the marathon, I don’t want a virtual to be my first. It feels like cheating to just receive a medal in the mail without proof that you earned it, since everyone signing up is going to get one in the mail without needing to really run for it. I don’t want to run it on the honor system, I want to run a real, live, officially timed race and I want it on paper that me, myself, and I did this honestly, to the fullest of what I have to give. I want my first full 26.2 miles to be in person, with those crowds pushing me through and motivate me through every mile and I want to feel it in my heart as I cross that finish line. No virtual is going to do that and I’m not going to miss out on that experience for my first time. So for now, we’re going to pivot and put the goal on hold. I’m hoping I can find maybe a local race that will still be taking place next year like the NYC marathon or something, so I can have that under my belt to know that a marathon is doable for me, and then possibly take on the Dopey Challenge in 2022. If not, then we’ll reset the first marathon to be 2022, and the Dopey in 2023. I’d rather not keep rescheduling my dreams and goals, but hey, there’s a time and place for everything. Right now, the universe is telling me to continue slowing down. So for now, I’ll continue with my running as part of my regular workout routine, but I’m going to put a pause on my marathon training. Since it looks like 2021 might still be some time before we go back to somewhat normal and are able to travel again, I'm going to make 2021 the year I save up my money to do ALL those runs hopefully in 2022. The year we break my legs, hahaha! Just because 2021 is being rained on doesn't mean we quit. We must continue on, but now we're going to make even bigger goals and climb even more mountains. One day we’ll conquer the Dopey Challenge, the Castaway Challenge, and the Castle to Chateau Challenge though, I promise you! It's going to be epic.
