NYCC 2019

October 16, 2019

New York Comic Con, it’s a bittersweet goodbye.

Every year this nerd prom is held at the Jacob Javits center.

I originally had a line up and then ended up winging it last minute because I couldn’t find all the parts to one of my cosplays, and that weekend ended up being colder than previous years so I ended up wearing my Harley catsuit for two of the days to stay warm yet comfortable.

This isn’t going to be a long post because well, there’s not much to say. NYCC came and went just as I expected. I attended all 4 days but I seriously was only there for about 1-3 hours each day. In the past I used to stay there for hours. I used to arrive early at opening and stay til 6-7pm. This year, I didn’t have an itinerary so I arrived late, which worked out because I didn’t have to wait in line and push through to get checked in. Arriving later, you just walk through, easy breezy. I walked the show floor every day trying to check it out and see if there was anything new, different or exciting. Sad to report, there was nothing to report. It’s the same old booths every year now, but with bigger crowds and longer lines, which deters me from wanting to stick around and wait. Thursdays used to be my favorite day with lower crowds but this year, Thursday felt like a Saturday so I was already feeling drained from the get go.

I did attend one panel that I thoroughly enjoyed and found encouraging as well as informative. The Cosplay corner held a “From Fangirl to Girl Boss” panel, highlighting how women can break through in unconventional careers that they have a great passion in and kill it. I don’t know if I’ll ever take the risk to such a unconventional path but it’s nice to know that it can be done and there are plenty of people who have done it. It’s just rare and really requires you to take that leap of faith. I met Diana Li, otherwise known as The Loveless on Instagram and she was really inspiring, giving me a few minutes of her time after the panel to speak with me. She told me of her friend who was also in the pharmacy field and now working in the entertainment industry and loving it. While I would love to make the transition, I’m an East Coast Asian, more accustomed and comfortable in having a job with job security so for now, I put security over my passion when it comes to my career. Maybe one day when I feel more secure in my finances, I’ll take the chance. Especially since another panelist revealed that age isn’t a factor as she started later in the game.

One pretty cool thing they did have this year was an art gallery dedicated to Harley Quinn and her evolution through the years with the different animations, renditions, costumes, and interpretations, both through art and live action. This gallery was probably one of my favorites to visit and it was actually kind of hidden since it wasn’t at the actual Javits center. It was good and bad because I would’ve never have known about it without Diana posting about it but when I did find where it was, I loved that it wasn’t crowded at all and you could browse at your leisure and take your time taking it all in. You could take as many photos as you want without an Instagram trap line. They even had the Harley bat available for you to do a quick video clip with, and they were giving out free Harley posters and pins.

I still had a good weekend, nonetheless. I took the opportunity to spend time with my family and celebrate the beginning of my birthday through multiple birthday dinners and cakes. It felt good to eat normal again for a minute, with no dietary restrictions. It felt even better coming back on Monday morning and finding that there was no damage done, haha!

I have no idea what I’m going to do next year to fill the NYCC weekend void but here’s to new beginnings and different paths!

RuPaul's DragCon NYC 2019

October 15, 2019

This was my third year attending RuPaul’s DragCon and this year I attended on Saturday, September 7th. I know, I know, this is overdue but September was half procrastination month and half trying to get real world stuff done so this is me trying to get all these posts out before I leave for vacation.

To be honest, I don’t know much about RuPaul’s Drag Race. I never got around to watching it. Maybe one day. Add it onto my backlog of shows and movies I need to catch up on. But I’ve always been in love with dramatic makeup, glitter and outrageous outfits and the splash of bright colors everywhere so I imagine it’ll be amazing when I do get around to it. I loved seeing all the different looks at the convention, the queens really go all out. For once, I feel under-dressed being among them, haha!

I mostly go to check out the booths, the makeup, the photo ops and see what everyone attending is wearing. In past years I never have time to stay all day because busy bee. This year was the same. I was there for just a few hours so I pretty much raced through to browse all the booths that caught my eye. If I’m being totally honest, I pretty much go for the Sugarpill booth to swatch and shop all new products and con exclusives and to get to see my inspiration Shrinkle, the founder of Sugarpill every year. I have so much love for that girl. I’m in love with the exclusive holographic tote they had for the convention this year since I’ve been on the hunt for one and this one branding the logo of my favorite makeup company was just perfect. My second favorite brand to visit every time is the Elektra Cosmetics booth for the glitter. Of course I picked up some new colors to add to my increasingly excessive collection at home. They came out with a “pride” rainbow bolt balm and a “spirit” bolt balm, which will go great with my red, white and blue looks. The women behind the Elektra Cosmetics brand is always there to greet me too, which I love. This is why I love indies. They’re so good at customer service and paying extra attention to you and remembering you.

This year I stumbled upon only a few new booths. I didn’t find a lot of different vendors that caught my eye. It was actually a lot of the same old every now and then. A lot were selling a knockoff of the Elektra glitter but in bigger, cheaper looking jars. And for a lot less. And the jars aren’t even airtight compared to Elektra. Not that I wouldn’t want to pay less for glitter, it also worries me that the quality is not there and not safe for use. There was also another booth selling biodegradable loose glitter, which my sister picked up a few jars of. There were quite a few booths with some gorgeous glitter and holographic nail polishes which got me wondering. I really hate going to the salon to get my nails done because I never take the time to make proper appointments, on top of not really wanting to pay to get them done. I want to see if I can learn to do gel manicures myself at home and get my husband to help paint them for me (since I can’t paint my right hand myself). 9 times out of 10, I always pick the same color anyway when I’m at the salon, even though I tell myself I want to try a different color. And that 1 time I do, I always regret it and think to myself I should’ve stuck to my regular picks.

While I do enjoy this con, I don’t know if I’ll be returning next year. The only reason I would attend is to snag Sugarpill exclusives and discounts. I feel like conventions are coming to an end for me. Like I’ve outgrown them. It’s very odd because I feel like I’m entering a new stage of life as I grow into my 30s. I’m finding that I no longer like the things I used to, but I’m not exactly finding new things to fill the void as quickly as the old hobbies leave me. Maybe I just need to slow down in general. Ah, que sera, sera!

End of an Era

June 18, 2019

While I do enjoy cosplaying from time to time, I actually hate putting money into it. It doesn't spark any joy. Especially from trial and error putting together a costume and getting the desired look right. In retrospect, I spent an insanely ridiculous amount of money on cosplay, which I could’ve easily spent elsewhere. I could’ve used that money for travel instead of making excuses saying I can’t afford to do this or that, when in reality, I probably could have, I just wasn’t committed to it. Instead, I tricked myself into thinking it wasn’t so bad. A little bit here for a wig, a little bit here for a prop, and a little bit here for a costume and some shoes. But all those ‘little bits’ eventually add up. One costume fully put together ends up being $300+. And then the costs associated with traveling to cons. Food, transpotation, hotel stays, spending money for showfloor goods. And the costs of attending cons isn’t exactly cheap either. When I first started going in 2013, once upon a time, a NYCC 3 day ticket was $65. Now a single day is $55 and a multiple day pass is no cheaper at $190.

All these costs add up. Not that I was doing any of this to profit from anything other than just having fun at my own expense, but at this point, the fun no longer justifies the costs and time. I don’t get as much out of it anymore. NYCC is the same year after year with no improvement or evolution on the entertainment and content it provides and all the various cons I’ve attended are no different. Big cons are getting too crowded and repetitive at what they have to offer. Small cons are claimed to be “more intimate” and “less stressful” with more room to breathe, but I find them rather dinky in what they have to offer. The booths are all the same after a while too regardless if it is a big or small con, selling the same wares and marked up 3x more than what I can easily Google for cheaper. Sometimes, I’ll find a small gem of a indie creator for art, novelty toys or accessories but is it really worth my time to sift through the crowd to find this diamond in the rough? It’s like circling a Forever 21 several times to make sure you didn’t miss anything. As I grow older, my patience grows thinner and I start to care less and less.

I mainly stayed and attended for the cosplay aspect as I’ve always enjoyed dressing up, especially in costume, and getting a photo taken to bring the character to life. But I find this process even more grueling lately, the hunting down of photos from cons. Aside from my regular go-to photographers, I absolutely hate when people ask for photos or a quick shoot at conventions, only to find out the photos turned out garbage because the photographer’s skills were lacking (seriously my sister can do better on my camera sometimes compared to half the garbage that comes back) or I wasted my time because they're never going to even send back photos. Which is another rude annoyance because why did you bother to stop me for photos if you were just going to waste my time?

It’s so hard finding good photographers too, let alone REAL photographers and not just creepy weird men with cameras posing as photographers. Every guy out there thinks they can just buy a camera and put “photographer” in their bio just so some cosplay hoe will do artistic nudes/lewds (god I hate that dumb word) and voila, slyly gain some new spankbank material for their personal collection. Some of these wolf in sheeps clothing will also try to sleep with you. There is a lack of professionalism as these imposters don’t know a damn thing about photography nor social graces and common decency. This harms the chances of a real photographer from being found. The missed opportunities of great networking with new talent. It’s truly annoying because I am actively looking for new photographers to collaborate and work with to increase my portfolio, always. But it’s hard. It’s hard to find the good ones and it’s hard to find people who are truly there for the art. Who want to photograph more than just tits and ass. Who have an eye for the shot. The color. The composition. The bigger picture. It’s also hard to find people who are humble and easy to work with. I found a lot of egos in the cosplay community. And let me tell you, you ain’t shit. It’s just cosplay. Unless you’re out there in the real world and able to create beautiful photos of more than just cosplay, I’m not impressed. Expand your horizons.

That’s the other thing I’m tired of. The community. There’s so much about that annoys the hell out of me. Which is probably why I’ve distanced myself from it for a while now. The egos. The rants. The elitists. The social justice warriors. The trolls. The ones looking to start fights. The passive aggressive frenemies. The fakeness between cosplayers as they shoutout for shoutout and fakely post each other as each other’s #womancrushwednesday to increase each other’s follower count mutually. It’s a lot of high school drama. Fake friends and when you get called out, you hide behind each other trying to back pedal your words instead of owning up to what you said.

So this NYCC will probably be my last. I was talking to an old friend earlier this week and it's true, I think I finally did grow out of these conventions. I'm going to give it one last shot this year, try to finish up old projects and then finally sell off the rest of the cosplays in my closet and give them all new homes before moving on. Of course, I’ll still keep a few of my top favorites like Harley, Juliet and Sailor Moon, in case I ever feel like busting out an oldie from time to time. Halloween and costumes aren’t what I grew out of, I still love October regardless. And I still love modeling and dressing up, I just no longer enjoy attending these conventions and taking part in cosplay activities. I don’t regret my dabbling in cosplay as I did enjoy the characters I did get to cosplay, but I do regret the time and money spent on it, as there were some characters I really never had any business doing and a lot of money thrown away as I tried to get the Sailor Moon look right several times. But you live and learn. Had I not wasted my money on cosplay, I’m sure it would’ve been allocated to some other dumb hobby I picked up for a minute. Or more expensive shoes. I am slowly learning to cut back and de-clutter my life as well. I sold a lot of costumes and dresses in the past year and got rid of a lot of make-up collecting dust in my room. Of course, being the person I am, I’m never going to be a minimalist/basic bitch but I do want to cut out the unnecessary things in my life to free up more time and space.

The one thing that always has remained constant is my love for fashion, photos and shooting all the time. I started modeling in 2009 and I still love it to this day even if I’m shooting a simple look. I hibernated for the winter barely doing any shoots but now that the weather has gotten warmer, I’m ramping up to get back to work. I’m excited to shoot more looks this summer and share them soon. I also started taking more photos with my husband from time to time during my shoots. I LOVE when I get the chance to do this, as it’s rare for him to be a willing participant and rare for me to be able to get nice photos of us together. I’m in love with taking photos with my loved ones lately. I’ve also been starting to shoot with my sister more and I love the photos I’m able to get back from those shoots too.

It may be the end of an era for cosplay but I’ve been modeling way before I started going to NYCC. The model in me will always live on. And I’m excited to see what adventures I’ll embark on to fill the NYCC void next year come October! The closing of one chapter is simply the start of a brand new story. 2020 is going to be an interesting year as we venture into new territory.
